Told entirely through the exchange of letters, notes, and cards, the story follows them from second grade through adulthood, war, and separate marriages. Andrew follows a path of duty and political success, while Melissa leads a rebellious, artistic life marked by personal struggle. Despite their diverging paths, their lifelong correspondence reveals a complex, enduring bond of missed opportunities and deep affection that transcends distance and time.
